App User-Acquisition Agency Cost in India (and CPI)

Indian agencies publish retainers from ₹75,000 to ₹6 lakh a month, or 8-15% of spend. CPI figures disagree by 5-6x. Here's how to budget with both.

By Abhilash LR

Budget the agency fee separately from your media spend. In India, published rate cards put app user-acquisition fees at roughly ₹75,000 to ₹6 lakh a month as a retainer, or 8-15% of ad spend as a percentage, depending on agency size and scope. Plan your cost per install (CPI) from your own test, not from a headline number, because the public CPI figures for India disagree with each other by 5-6x.

Key Takeaways

  • Agency fees (seller-published, India, 2026): boutique specialists ₹75,000-₹2.5 lakh a month, mid-size agencies ₹2-6 lakh, large networks ₹8 lakh and up. Percentage models run 8-15% of ad spend, stepping down as spend grows.
  • These are sellers' figures, not surveys. Nobody we found publishes a sample or a method, and the sources disagree with each other.
  • There is no verified India CPI benchmark. The one thing every source agrees on is direction: install costs in India run far below US and Western European costs, and app category matters more than country.
  • The CPI that matters is the one your economics can afford. Work backwards from what an install is worth to you, then test.

How Much Does an Agency Charge for App User-Acquisition in India?

Agencies in India price in three ways: a flat monthly retainer, a percentage of ad spend, or a hybrid of the two. Ad spend itself is paid to the platforms and is never part of the fee.

The Shizz, a marketing agency, published its 2026 rate view in September. It splits retainers by agency tier and states no method or sample. upGrowth's April 2026 rate card gives a second view. Both are sellers describing their own market.

Monthly retainer ranges by agency tier, India (₹ lakh) Seller-published 2026 retainer ranges per month. Freelancer or solo consultant: 0.15 to 0.5 lakh. Boutique specialist: 0.75 to 2.5 lakh. Mid-size full-service: 2 to 6 lakh. Large or network agency: 8 lakh and above. Published monthly retainer by agency tier (₹ lakh, ex-GST) Freelancer 0.15-0.5 Boutique 0.75-2.5 Mid-size 2-6 Large / network 8+ Source: The Shizz (agency blog), 4 Sep 2026. Model Published range Notes
Freelancer / solo consultant ₹15,000-₹50,000 a month The Shizz
Boutique specialist retainer ₹75,000-₹2.5 lakh a month The Shizz
Mid-size full-service retainer ₹2-₹6 lakh a month The Shizz
Large / network agency ₹8 lakh a month and up The Shizz
Flat retainer by scope ₹1.5-2 lakh single channel; ₹4-6 lakh+ full funnel upGrowth rate card
Percentage of ad spend Typically 10-15%, tiered: 15% on the first ₹10 lakh, 12% to ₹30 lakh, 10% to ₹1 crore, 8% above upGrowth rate card
Percentage by spend band 15-20% under ₹3 lakh; 10-15% at ₹3-10 lakh; 8-12% at ₹10-50 lakh; 5-8% above ₹50 lakh The Shizz
Hybrid A floor plus a percentage, whichever is higher (example: ₹2 lakh floor or 12%) upGrowth rate card

Two honest cautions. The ranges overlap and contradict each other: upGrowth's own page carries a second table with different bands. And Zephra's guide to agency pricing states it plainly: these are "sellers' figures, not surveys," and they usually exclude tax, creative production and tools.

What Costs Extra on Top of the Fee?

Ask for the proposal to be itemised. App programmes usually add line items that a headline retainer does not cover.

  • GST. Accounting references put GST on marketing and advertising services at 18%, so a ₹1 lakh retainer is ₹1.18 lakh payable. Confirm the treatment with your CA.
  • Attribution. Mobile measurement partner (MMP) setup and subscription fees are usually yours, not the agency's.
  • Creative. Video, UGC and playable production is often scoped separately from media management.
  • App Store Optimisation (ASO). Store listing work is frequently a separate engagement.
  • Setup. Some agencies charge a one-time onboarding or audit fee.

Retainer or Percentage: Which Is Cheaper?

It is simple division. A ₹1.5 lakh retainer equals a 12% fee at ₹12.5 lakh of monthly spend. Below that spend, the percentage is cheaper; above it, the flat fee is. Percentage models align the agency with your spend, not your profit, so the question to ask is what the fee is tied to.

What Cost Per Install Should You Plan For in India?

Plan from your own economics, because no public India CPI benchmark holds up. When we reviewed commonly cited figures, one source stated an average of about $1.18 per install, another a range of $0.20-$0.70, and a third gave rupee figures by category that converted to yet another number. None disclosed a sample size, category mix or date range.

Three things are consistent across the sources:

  1. India and Indonesia cost far less per install than the US or Western Europe. The exact multiple varies.
  2. Category drives the spread more than country does. Fintech and lending apps sit at the expensive end; casual games at the cheap end.
  3. iOS usually costs more per install than Android. Published guides report this consistently, without agreeing on the size of the gap.

Work backwards: the break-even CPI

Instead of guessing a market CPI, calculate the most you can pay for an install:

Break-even CPI = share of installs that become paying users × revenue per paying user over your payback window.

If 4% of installs become paying users and each pays ₹600 in their first 90 days, an install is worth about ₹24. A CPI above ₹24 loses money inside that window. The numbers here are illustrative; plug in your own retention and revenue.

Then run a bounded test, split by platform and category, and read your own CPI before committing a scaling budget. For retention-aware scaling, see our guide to scaling app installs without losing retention.

How to Get Quotes You Can Compare

  1. State your platform mix. Android only, iOS only, or both, and which Indian cities or states.
  2. Share your app category and the KPI that matters. CPI, cost per registration, cost per paying user, or return on ad spend.
  3. Decide the scope. Media buying only, or media plus creative, ASO and attribution.
  4. Ask for three numbers separately. Media spend, agency fee, and one-time setup cost, each excluding GST.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I expect an app agency in India to charge a retainer or a percentage?

Both are common. Smaller engagements usually run on a monthly retainer, while larger programmes often move to a percentage of ad spend that steps down as budgets grow. Ask what each fee covers, what the minimum is, and whether creative and attribution are included.

Is ad spend included in the agency fee?

No. Ad spend is paid directly to the platforms, such as Google, Meta, TikTok or Apple, and is billed separately from the agency's fee. Confirm in writing who owns the ad accounts and who is billed for the media.

What CPI should I forecast for India?

Forecast from a small test of your own app rather than from a published average, because the public figures disagree by 5-6x and none disclose their method. Use the break-even CPI formula above to set a ceiling, then compare your test result against it.

Why does iOS cost more per install than Android in India?

Published guides consistently report higher iOS costs. The usual explanation is heavier advertiser competition for a more valuable audience, but we found no source that quantifies it, and none agree on the size of the gap, so measure it in your own campaigns.

Do creative, attribution and ASO add to the cost?

Usually yes. Creative production, mobile measurement partner fees and App Store Optimisation are commonly scoped as separate line items, and quoted fees generally exclude GST. Ask for them itemised so quotes can be compared fairly.

How do I lower CPI without hurting user quality?

Test creative on a steady cadence, segment audiences, tidy your store listing and measure with reliable attribution. Cheaper installs only help if those users retain and pay, so judge CPI together with retention and revenue per user, not on its own.
