How to Vet an AI Marketing Agency in India
Meta, Google and TikTok already automate bidding and creative for free. How to test what an Indian agency's AI adds, plus one TikTok caveat most guides miss.
By Abhilash LR
To judge an Indian agency that uses AI to automate bidding and creative testing, make it show three things: exactly what its AI automates and what humans still decide, proof that it adds measurable results beyond the free automation Meta, Google and TikTok already provide, and a contract that leaves you owning your accounts and data. Ask for a live walkthrough on a real campaign, not a slide. And check the markets: TikTok has been banned in India since 2020, so any TikTok automation an Indian agency sells applies to other countries' audiences.
Key Takeaways
- The platforms already automate. Meta's Andromeda was built to strengthen Advantage+, Google's Smart Bidding and Performance Max optimise at auction time, and TikTok's Smart+ automates targeting, optimisation and creative. An agency's value is what it adds above these.
- Inputs and targets are where agencies add value. Google's 17 August 2026 change makes budget-limited Target CPA and ROAS campaigns track your stated target far more literally, so the target you set matters more than before.
- TikTok caveat. TikTok is banned in India. Smart+ is relevant only for campaigns aimed at markets where TikTok operates, such as Singapore or Indonesia.
- Evidence beats adjectives. Ask for documented tests with hypotheses, sample sizes and holdouts.
What Is the Agency's "AI" Actually Doing?
Start with a plain question: what does it automate, and what does a person still decide? A credible agency can name the inputs, the decision rules, the outputs and how often the system is updated. Ask for a live demonstration on an active campaign, including a bidding decision or a creative selection, with the data behind it.
Vague answers such as "proprietary AI optimisation" are not evidence. Compare any answer against what the platforms already do.
What Do the Platforms Already Automate?
| Platform automation | What it does | What the agency should add |
|---|---|---|
| Meta Advantage+ and Andromeda | Andromeda is Meta's ad-retrieval engine; Meta describes it as strengthening Advantage+ automation | Genuinely different creative, clean conversion data, and tests outside Meta's own reporting |
| Google Smart Bidding and Performance Max | Auction-time bidding and automated asset combinations | Targets set from your margin, brand-term protection and a check on search overlap |
| TikTok Smart+ | Per TikTok, helps automate campaign and audience targeting, optimisation and creative, including fatigue detection and auto-refresh | Measurement rigour and creative direction, for markets where TikTok runs |
Two details show where automation leaves room for judgment.
- Targets now bind harder. Since 17 August 2026, Google holds budget-limited Target CPA and Target ROAS campaigns to the target you set. A stale target is now a cost. An agency should revisit targets against your current unit economics.
- Automation can overlap itself. An Optmyzr study of 503 accounts found keyword overlap between Search and Performance Max in 91.45% of them, even though Google says an exact-match Search keyword should be preferred. Ask how an agency checks for it.
Does the Agency Tie Optimisation to Your Economics?
Low cost per result is not the goal. Ask how it handles margin, lifetime value and acceptable acquisition cost. For leads, ask how it optimises for qualified leads rather than the cheapest form-fill. For a store, ask whether it optimises to profit, not revenue alone. Our post on why an account can look fine but not be profitable shows how the gap appears.
How Should Creative Testing Be Run?
Rotating ads at random is not testing. Look for a written protocol.
- A hypothesis for each test, and a note on what you will do with the answer.
- Test size, duration and a control or holdout.
- A rule for declaring winners that does not depend on one good day.
- A clear split between automated selection and human creative direction, so the system does not over-fit to short-term signals.
For a deeper framework, see creative testing for performance marketing.
Who Owns the Data and the Accounts?
You should own ad accounts, pixels and tags, audiences and raw reporting data, and the agency should be granted access, not the reverse. Ask that server-side tracking (Meta's Conversions API, Google's Enhanced Conversions) is set up and verified, and who owns any models, scripts or playbooks built on your data. Our guide to attribution and measurement explains why this decides whether results are real.
What Proof Should You Ask For?
- A live walkthrough of the system making a bidding or creative decision on a real campaign.
- Before-and-after results tied to sales, qualified leads or unit economics, with test length and traffic context.
- Test documentation: hypotheses, sample sizes, holdouts and the statistical approach.
- Evidence of correct tracking: server-side setup, tag ownership and access controls.
- References, and a precise statement of what was automated and what was manual in each case.
What About TikTok in an Indian Agency Pitch?
TikTok was blocked in India in June 2020 and, as far as we could find, remains banned in 2026. We found no sign that TikTok ads are available for Indian audiences. An Indian agency can legitimately run TikTok campaigns for other markets, for example Singapore or Indonesia. If a pitch promises TikTok results for Indian customers, ask exactly how.
Get an Independent Read of Your Account First
Before you judge an agency's AI, know what your own account looks like. Loupe is COACT's one-time Meta and Google Ads audit: 133 checks across measurement, Meta, Google, cross-channel priorities and the post-click journey, $199-$399, a report in 3-7 business days, no retainer. View the sample report first. It suits D2C and ecommerce brands spending roughly ₹2.5 lakh or US$3,000 a month with at least 60 days of data.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I tell if an agency's "AI" is real or marketing language?
Ask for a live demonstration of the system on an active campaign: the inputs, the decision logic and the outputs. Ask what is automated and what a person reviews. Real systems can explain their data sources, rules and update cadence.
Should I avoid agencies that use Performance Max, Advantage+ or Smart+?
No. These tools are powerful, and most good agencies use them. The question is what the agency adds on top: better data, more genuinely different creative, margin-based targets and measurement outside the platform.
What measurement and access should I insist on?
You should own the ad accounts, pixels, tags, audiences and raw reporting data. Require server-side tracking to be set up and verified, and for the agency to be granted access rather than hold the assets.
How do I know creative testing is rigorous?
Ask for a written protocol with hypotheses, test size and duration, controls and a winner rule. Ask how automated selection is balanced with human creative direction.
Can an Indian agency run TikTok campaigns?
For other markets, yes, such as Singapore or Indonesia. For Indian audiences, TikTok has been banned since 2020 and we found no evidence that ads are available. Ask any agency which countries its TikTok work targets.
What should a shortlisted agency provide before I sign?
A live demo, case examples with business metrics, test documentation, tracking evidence, references and a clear statement of who owns the data and any models built on it.
